Hello and welcome to my blog! This blog is about gluten-free traveling, and will contain first-hand restaurant recommendations!

In this blog post, you will find the blog introduction and disclaimers. I highly recommend reading this prior to reading any of the blog posts, so there will be no misunderstandings.

Why was this blog born?

Traveling gluten-free can be challenging. It requires extra preparation and investigation of the trip destination, and that is exhausting! Starting a gluten-free diet means that not only do you give up on wheat, you also give up on spontaneity.

As of writing these lines, I’m on vacation. A few days ago I was sitting in a restaurant, enjoying my delicious meal and thinking to myself “Hey, I got here by accident. This wasn’t one of the restaurants I discovered in my research prior to coming here, and this is good! Other people should know about it!”.

More than that, I also learned some tips and tricks, ones you can only learn by experience, and it’s a shame that I would keep it to myself.

What information will be here?

This is not a traveling blog and I’m not going to talk about cool places to visit. My main goal here is to make your life easier. Hopefully, when you do your pre-travel search for restaurants (like all gluten-free buddies do), this will pop up and save you some time.

You might wonder why is there a need for that blog when there are websites like Google Maps and Tripadvisor that give you similar information. I also use those resources, but there are three main things I find missing there:

  1. In between all the hundreds of recommendations, it’s hard to determine what is good and what is ok. These numbers are lacking a more personal experience and gluten-free specific experience.
  2. Some restaurants are not gluten-free but claim they are, and vise versa. I’m not sure which is more unfortunate.
  3. What about general tips that are not related to a specific restaurant? They are also important!

A bit about me and some disclaimers

My name is Ifat and I have been gluten-free since 2016. There is a lot to say about the gluten-free life, and I will, but not now. This is what you need to know for now: There are several levels of strictness when it comes to a gluten-free diet, and this blog will fit mine.

This is my philosophy: I was diagnosed with celiac and I will not eat gluten. However, I am fine with “might contain”, which means that they might use the same oven or there might be bread crumbs on the table where they put the gluten-free cutting board. I’m fine with that.

So, if you do not eat “might contain gluten traces” labeled food — take that into consideration when reading. Of course, I will mention if a place has gluten-free awareness or if it’s a regular restaurant that also serves dishes that can be gluten-free.

Starting a gluten-free diet can be very confusing, and I will write a beginner guide in the future, so don’t worry! I’ve got you!

Ranking explanation:

Awareness: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Variety: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
My experience: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

For every restaurant I mention, I finish with a final ranking that has three categories:

Awareness: Do they mark dishes on the menu as gluten-free? Do they use different containers, different surfaces, etc.?
Variety: Do they have gluten-free alternatives such as gluten-free bread, gluten-free soy, etc.? Or do they think that a single boring salad as the only gluten-free option is good enough?
My experience: That’s not gluten-free related, but a restaurant is more than just the food. Was the service pleasing? Does the place have a cool vibe?
